On March 22nd, the Stake Center was abuzz with excitement as youth from various wards came together for an enriching activity—Youth Personal Grooming and Etiquette Day. This thoughtfully organized event aimed to equip young individuals with vital skills in grooming, manners, and social etiquette, fostering confidence and grace in diverse settings.

The event was formally opened by Stake President Stephen Abu Jr., who underscored the significance of self-presentation, respect, and dignity in both spiritual and secular aspects of life. Distinguished attendees included First Counselor to the Stake Presidency, President Delvyn Sandison, Young Men President Brother Francis Agodzo, Young Women President Sister Fiona Bessa-Simons(Together with Georgina Addy and Lillian Buina), as well as members of the Young Women presidencies from various wards. Their collective efforts were instrumental in ensuring the success of this impactful initiative.

A Rotational Learning Experience

To maximize engagement, the youth were divided into groups, rotating through interactive learning stations, each designed to cover specific aspects of grooming and etiquette. The sessions were led by skilled instructors who combined practical demonstrations with participatory lessons.

  1. Dressing Appropriately for Different Occasions (Modesty)Sister Lillian Buina provided valuable insights into dressing appropriately for various settings such as church, school, interviews, and social gatherings. She emphasized the principles of modesty, neatness, and cultural sensitivity, reminding the youth that their appearance reflects their values and self-respect.
  2. Respectful Body Language and Active ListeningBrother Francis Agodzo guided participants through the essentials of non-verbal communication. Through engaging activities, he illustrated how posture, eye contact, and gestures shape perceptions. He also stressed the importance of active listening as a tool for building stronger, more genuine relationships.
  3. Basic Table MannersSister Elizabeth Munkoh broke down dining etiquette into simple, practical steps. Her session covered:
    • Proper sitting posture at the table
    • Napkin placement and use
    • Polite handling of utensils
    • Common dining mistakes to avoid

The hands-on nature of the session made it both enjoyable and impactful for the youth.

  1. Formal and Informal Dining EtiquetteSisters Fiona Bessa-Simons and Huberta Afeku expanded on dining etiquette by distinguishing between formal and informal settings. Their comprehensive session included:
    • An overview of the continental and American dining styles
    • Tips for engaging in polite conversation while dining
    • Techniques for handling challenging-to-eat foods gracefully

The use of a mock dining setup provided participants with an opportunity to practice their newfound skills in a realistic environment.

A Day of Growth and Fellowship

In addition to the valuable lessons, the event fostered a sense of unity among the youth as they bonded through shared experiences and mutual encouragement. The day was marked by laughter, curiosity, and an earnest commitment to self-improvement.

As the program concluded, participants departed not only with practical knowledge but also with a renewed sense of confidence and purpose. The principles of grooming and etiquette imparted during the event transcended basic social skills, instilling values of self-discipline, respect for others, and the importance of representing their faith with dignity.

Youth Personal Grooming and Etiquette Day proved to be more than just a workshop—it was an investment in the personal and social development of the youth. By mastering these essential skills, they are poised to become exemplary individuals in their communities, schools, and future careers.

This highly successful event sets a strong precedent for future activities that will continue to inspire growth, wisdom, and favor among the youth of the stake.

The gathering place of the Tema Ghana Stake came alive on 29th September 2024 as the Young Single Adults (YSAs) from across the stake assembled to witness the launch of the Tema Campus Institute. This much-anticipated Campus Institute is aimed at providing a spiritual and social foundation for YSAs, fostering self-improvement, stronger relationships, and a path to maturity.

The launch was attended by key leaders within the stake, including President Dennis Appiah Kubi, the Second Counselor in the Stake Presidency; Brother Emmanuel Amissah Forson, Specialist for the Tema Campus Institute; Sister Thornton, a YSA Gathering Place Missionary; and Brother Prince Mensah, the S&I Coordinator responsible for the stake. Their collective messages echoed the importance of the Campus Institute and the vital role it plays in the lives of YSAs.

In his remarks, President Appiah Kubi emphasized the need for young adults to be involved in the Institute’s activities to strengthen their spirituality and interpersonal relationships. He highlighted how the Institute is not only a place for learning gospel principles but also a setting for personal growth and self-discovery. Brother Forson and Brother Mensah, tasked with overseeing the institute, echoed similar sentiments, underscoring that participation in the various programs offered at the campus would shape the participants’ spiritual, social, and emotional well-being.

The launch was a milestone for the stake and the YSA community. It marks a significant step in the stake’s efforts to provide meaningful opportunities for YSAs to grow spiritually, socially, and emotionally. They introduced two flagship programs that will undoubtedly expand into other programs in the future.

Morning Program: Breakfast with the Prophet

The first program, titled “Breakfast with the Prophet,” a spiritually enriching experience that connects the YSAs with messages from modern-day prophets. This program will give the participants an opportunity to reflect on the teachings of church leaders and apply them to their daily lives. Over breakfast, they will delve into prophetic counsel, strengthening their commitment to gospel living.

Afternoon Program: Missionary Preparation Class

For the second program in the afternoon, attention will shift to missionary work, with a comprehensive “Missionary Preparation Class“. This class is designed to prepare YSAs for full-time missionary service, as well as to instill a deeper understanding of sharing the gospel. The practical lessons will help participants gain confidence in their ability to teach and serve.

Engaging Activities to Build Unity

The second part of the event was directed by two dynamic facilitators, Sisters Chloe and Hazel Alafegha-Quakumey, who are siblings from the Batsona 2 Ward YSA, organized fun and engaging activities for the YSAs. These activities not only encouraged teamwork and strengthened friendships but also created a lively and enjoyable atmosphere for all in attendance.

As the programs expand in the coming months, YSAs are encouraged to fully engage and participate, knowing that the institute is dedicated to helping them build a solid foundation for the future.

The leadership of the Tema Ghana Stake looks forward to seeing the positive impact the Campus Institute will have on the young adults as they continue their journey towards maturity and spiritual strength.

On August 30th, the Gathering Place became a hub of excitement as single adults and parents from the community came together for an impactful Entrepreneurship Devotional. The event drew a substantial crowd, all eager to learn about the educational and vocational opportunities available to them through various church-supported initiatives.

The evening’s guest speaker was Sroda Wellington, a distinguished resource person from the Area Office and a supervisor of the Perpetual Education Fund (PEF). Her role in guiding and supporting educational and entrepreneurial pursuits within the community made her insights particularly valuable to those in attendance.

Insights into the Perpetual Education Fund (PEF)

Sroda Wellington delivered a comprehensive presentation on the Perpetual Education Fund (PEF), focusing on its mission to provide interest-free loans to students pursuing education in vocational and technical schools. She explained that the PEF is designed to help members of the church who wish to gain practical skills that will lead to self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.

The PEF is particularly aimed at students who might not have the financial means to pursue further education but are determined to build a career in fields that require vocational or technical training. Sroda outlined the qualifications needed to apply for the PEF loan, emphasizing that applicants must demonstrate a clear commitment to their chosen field of study and a plan for repaying the loan. She also detailed the application process, encouraging eligible members to take advantage of this opportunity to advance their education and career prospects.

Exploring the Benson Scholarship: Empowering Agricultural Education

In addition to discussing the PEF, Sroda Wellington introduced the Benson Scholarship, a grant specifically designed for church members interested in agricultural education. She explained that this scholarship is available to those who wish to gain expertise in agriculture, a field that is crucial for promoting food security and sustainable development.

The Benson Scholarship covers the cost of education in agricultural studies, enabling recipients to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to their communities. Sroda highlighted the importance of agricultural education in addressing local challenges and improving the quality of life in farming areas. She encouraged attendees with a passion for agriculture to apply for this grant and take the opportunity to make a positive impact.

The BYU Pathway Program: A Path to Higher Education

Sroda Wellington also took the opportunity to discuss the BYU Pathway program, an initiative that offers affordable, flexible higher education options to individuals worldwide. She highlighted the program’s benefits, such as the ability to earn a degree from a respected institution while balancing other life responsibilities.

She explained how the BYU Pathway program is designed to be accessible to a broad range of students, making it an excellent choice for those who wish to further their education without incurring significant debt. Sroda emphasized that this program can be a stepping stone to greater opportunities, both academically and professionally.

Engaging with the Community: A Lively Q&A Session

Following Sroda Wellington’s informative presentation, the floor was opened for questions, leading to an engaging and lively Q&A session. The attendees asked numerous questions, ranging from the specifics of the PEF loan application process to details about the Benson Scholarship and the BYU Pathway program. Sroda answered each question with clarity and patience, ensuring that everyone left with a thorough understanding of the opportunities discussed.

The Entrepreneurship Devotional at the Gathering Place was a resounding success, marked by high attendance and active participation. The event provided valuable information on educational and vocational resources, empowering attendees to pursue their goals with renewed confidence.

Sroda Wellington’s thorough explanations and the engaging Q&A session equipped the community with the knowledge they need to take advantage of the resources available to them. As the attendees left the Gathering Place, there was a palpable sense of optimism and determination, fueled by the belief that with the right support, they can achieve their dreams and build a brighter future for themselves and their families.

In a remarkable display of unity and service, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the Tema Stake gathered at the Tema General Hospital for this year’s All Africa Service Project on 17th August. The event brought together members from five wards—Tema 1, 2, 3, 4 and Newtown Wards—each dedicating a day to giving back to the community.

The day began with a prayer, setting a reverent tone for the activities ahead. Attendees were then divided into teams, with each group assigned specific tasks to improve the hospital’s environment. The involvement of bishops and auxiliary leaders from each unit added to the sense of community and purpose, as everyone worked together to achieve common goals.

A significant highlight of the day was the blood donation drive, spearheaded by Bishop Michael K. Odoom. This initiative was critical in addressing the ongoing need for blood at the hospital, and many members volunteered, offering their blood to save lives. The presence of Elder Patrick Appianti-Sarpong, an area seventy, along with his family, underscored the importance of the event. Elder Appianti participation, along with Brother Ebo Ghartey, Stake High Councilor, and President Dennis Appiah Kubi, the second counselor in the Stake Presidency, ensuring smooth coordination of the day’s activities.

The hospital staff warmly welcomed the volunteers with a hearty breakfast prior to the service. The service activities were meticulously organized, with team leads directing efforts in various areas of the hospital. The volunteers first tackled the grounds around the Physiotherapy Unit, weeding and ensuring that the area was tidy and presentable. They then moved to the Maternity Ward, where they cleared gutters clogged with sand, mud, and refuse, an essential task to prevent water blockages and enhance the overall hygiene of the facility. The work extended to the Administration Block, where teams worked diligently to clean the surroundings, contributing to a safer and more pleasant environment for both hospital staff and patients.

The impact of this service project was profound, not only in terms of the physical cleanliness achieved but also in fostering a spirit of volunteerism and community service. The hospital leaders expressed their deep gratitude, acknowledging the vital role such community-driven initiatives play in maintaining the health facility.

The event also served to strengthen the bonds within the Church community, as members came together in a shared purpose, embodying the teachings of Christ through their actions. By serving others and making a positive difference in society, the members of the Tema Stake demonstrated their commitment to living the principles of love, care, and selflessness. Their efforts at the Tema General Hospital not only improved the facility but also uplifted the spirits of those involved, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated.

On the 10th of August, the Tema Stake Center became a beacon of inspiration and learning as sisters from the Tema Stake Relief Society gathered for a highly anticipated conference. The event, marked by a sense of unity and purpose, featured speakers who are well versed in their subject matter. Among which two distinguished speakers shared invaluable insights on spiritual and financial matters, themes that resonated deeply with all in attendance.

A Spiritual Journey: The Blessings of Temple Ordinances and Covenants

Sister Essie Anno Sackey, the Area Organizational Advisor for Accra and Accra West Coordinating Councils with her topic, “The Blessings of Temple Ordinances and Covenants,” addressed a profound exploration of the sacredness of the temple and the eternal significance of the covenants we make there.

Sister Sackey’s message was both inspiring and instructive, urging all present to prepare diligently to enter the temple. She emphasized that the temple is not just a physical building but a place where we draw closer to God and secure blessings that extend beyond this life. She reminded the sisters of the importance of making and keeping covenants, describing these sacred promises as a source of strength and guidance in our daily lives.

A key takeaway from her presentation was the emphasis on the continuous process of preparation. Sister Sackey highlighted the need to reflect regularly on the covenants we have made, to strive to live by them, and to let them guide our decisions and actions. She encouraged the sisters to see the temple as a refuge and a place of renewal, where they could find peace and direction amid the challenges of life.

Navigating Financial Challenges: Effective Financial Management in Challenging Times

Dr. Patrick Baah-Acquah, a renowned Banking & Finance Consultant, took the stage to address the pressing issue of financial management, particularly in these challenging economic times. His presentation, titled “Effective Financial Management in Challenging Times,” provided practical advice and strategies for achieving financial stability and security.

Dr. Baah-Acquah’s insights were timely, as many are currently facing financial difficulties due to the global economic situation. He stressed the importance of self-reliance, encouraging the sisters to take ownership of their financial decisions and to be proactive in managing their resources. His advice on budgeting, saving, and prudent spending was both practical and empowering, offering the sisters tools to better navigate their financial lives.

One of the central themes of Dr. Baah-Acquah’s presentation was the importance of prioritizing the payment of honest tithes. He explained that financial management is not just about making wise decisions with money but also about aligning our financial practices with our spiritual beliefs. By faithfully paying tithes, he assured, we open ourselves to spiritual and temporal blessings that contribute to our overall well-being.

Empowering Sisters Through Self-Reliance Resources

Bishop Amonoo recently extended a heartfelt invitation to all sisters, encouraging them to delve into the “My Personal Finance for Self Reliance” manual available on the Gospel Library. He highlighted the wealth of self-reliance resources and courses that the Church offers, designed to empower members with essential life skills. Bishop Amonoo emphasized the importance of these tools in fostering personal and financial independence. He also urged the sisters to enroll in a self-reliance course within their units, stressing that these programs are not just educational but transformative, equipping individuals to better manage their resources and achieve greater self-sufficiency.

Embracing Self-Reliance and Spiritual Growth

The Tema Relief Society Sisters Conference was more than just a meeting; it was a call to action. All speakers emphasized the importance of self-reliance—spiritually, by preparing for and honoring temple covenants, and temporally, by managing our finances wisely. The message was clear: self-reliance is a principle that extends across all aspects of life, enabling us to better serve our families, our communities, and our God.

The conference concluded with a sense of renewed commitment among the sisters to apply the teachings they had received. The unity and shared purpose felt throughout the event were a testament to the strength of the Relief Society and its mission to uplift and support one another.

As the sisters left the Stake Center, they did so with hearts full of gratitude and minds equipped with new knowledge and strategies to face the future with confidence. The teachings on temple ordinances and financial management will undoubtedly continue to influence their lives, helping them to achieve both spiritual and temporal success in the months and years to come.

In the words of Sister Sackey, “Let us remember the covenants we have made, strive to live by them, and seek the blessings that come from our obedience.” And as Dr. Baah-Acquah reminded, “Effective financial management is not just about surviving but thriving, even in challenging times.” These messages will undoubtedly resonate in the hearts of all who attended, inspiring them to pursue greater heights in their spiritual and financial journeys.

However, the magic didn’t stop there. The Tema Tabernacle Choir, known for their exceptional artistry, rose to the occasion with unmatched fervor. Their rendition of Easter hymns and anthems resonated deeply, evoking a sense of reverence and joy that filled the hall.

Amidst the melodic splendour, leaders from the Church offered messages of hope, faith, and renewal, enriching the spiritual tapestry of the evening. Their words resonated with the audience, offering guidance and encouragement in a world often fraught with challenges.

Throughout the devotional, the synergy between EmVic Carole and the host choir was palpable, creating an atmosphere of unity and spiritual elevation. Together, they transcended barriers of language and culture, touching the souls of all who were present.

For attendees, it was more than just a musical performance; it was a spiritual journey, a testament to the power of music to uplift and inspire. As voices blended in harmonious praise, hearts were lifted, and spirits soared.

In the end, the Easter devotional at the Tema Ghana Stake Center was not merely an event—it was a divine encounter, a moment of profound connection with the sacred. Thanks to the Tema Tabernacle Choir, EmVic Carole, and all who contributed, it was a night to remember—a celebration of faith, music, and the enduring spirit of Easter.

On February 23rd, 2024, the Young Single Adults (YSA) Devotional’s Personal Development Series kicked off its first session at the Gathering Center in Community 10. Welcoming a packed room of enthusiastic young adults, the program featured guest speaker Margaret Titus-Glover, a highly experienced Human Resource (HR) practitioner.

Ms. Titus-Glover, a certified HR professional with over 17 years of experience in HR strategy, training, and professional development, brought valuable insights to the YSA audience. Her educational background, spanning universities in the UK and Ghana, coupled with her experience as the founder of MS Staffing, an HR consulting, training, and recruitment firm in Ghana, made her well-equipped to address the specific needs of young adults seeking career advancement.

Ms. Titus-Glover delved into the crucial yet often daunting task of preparing for the job market. Her insightful presentation focused on two key areas: crafting impactful resumes and mastering the art of interviewing.

Crafting a Winning Resume:

Ms. Titus-Glover emphasized the importance of tailoring your resume to each specific job you apply for. She offered various tips on how to effectively highlight your skills and experiences, including:

  • Utilizing keywords: Identifying and incorporating relevant keywords from the job description demonstrates a clear understanding of the desired qualifications and increases your chances of passing through applicant tracking systems.
  • Quantifying accomplishments: Don’t just list your responsibilities, quantify your achievements. Use numbers and data to showcase the impact you made in previous roles, making your resume stand out from the crowd.
  • Action verbs: Employ strong action verbs to describe your past experiences. Words like “managed,” “spearheaded,” and “developed” showcase your initiative and leadership qualities.
  • Clarity and conciseness: Keep your resume concise and easy to read. Use clear formatting and ensure all information is presented accurately and professionally.

Mastering the Interview:

Following her resume-building insights, Ms. Titus-Glover transitioned to the equally important aspect of interview preparation. She provided valuable advice on how to confidently navigate the interview process, including:

  • Research the company and role: Demonstrating knowledge about the company and the specific position shows genuine interest and initiative.
  • Prepare common interview questions: Practice answering anticipated questions like “Tell me about yourself” and “Why are you interested in this position?” Tailor your responses to highlight your skills and experiences relevant to the job.
  • Dress professionally: First impressions matter. Dress appropriately for the job and company culture to project professionalism and confidence.
  • Ask insightful questions: Prepare thoughtful questions for the interviewer. This shows your curiosity and engagement in the opportunity.
  • Follow up: Send a thank-you note after the interview, reiterating your interest in the position and summarizing your key qualifications.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A session, allowing attendees to ask further questions and receive personalized advice from Ms. Titus-Glover. This interactive approach fostered a positive learning environment and empowered young adults to confidently navigate their career journeys.

The YSA Devotional’s Personal Development Series promises to equip young adults with valuable life skills beyond the realm of spiritual growth. This inaugural session on career preparation served as a valuable resource for the YSA community, offering practical tools and strategies for successfully entering the workforce. With more sessions planned, the series holds the potential to empower young adults in Community 10 and beyond as they embark on their professional journeys.
