Tema 3rd Ward Celebrates 148 Years of Primary, Reflecting on a Legacy of Faith and Service

The Tema 3rd Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined the worldwide celebration of 148 years of Primary, marking the occasion with a special Sunday dedicated to the children and the lasting influence Primary has had on generations of members.

The celebration was filled with music, fellowship, service and moments that reflected the important place children hold in the life of the ward. From the opening moments of Sunday worship to activities with the children, the anniversary provided an opportunity for members to look back on the role Primary has played in shaping their faith and character.

Children Lead the Way in Sunday Worship

One of the highlights of the celebration came at the beginning of the Sunday service, when the Primary children joined together to sing for the congregation.

Their voices brought a special spirit into the meeting as they stood before members of the ward and shared through music what they have been learning in Primary.

For the children, the moment was an opportunity to participate in worship alongside the wider congregation. For parents, teachers and other members, it was a proud reminder of how much the children are growing.

The singing also reflected one of the lasting traditions of Primary—helping children develop confidence while teaching them gospel principles in ways they can understand and remember.

What may have looked like a simple song to some was, for the children, another step in learning to serve, participate and share their faith with others.

148 Years of Building Faith in Children

Primary has been part of the Church’s history for 148 years, beginning in 1878 with the purpose of providing children with gospel instruction and a safe environment where they could learn and grow.

Over the years, that work has expanded across the world, reaching children in different countries, cultures and communities.

In Tema 3rd Ward, the anniversary was a chance to recognize that the work of Primary goes far beyond Sunday lessons.

It is in Primary that many children first learn how to pray. It is where they begin learning scripture stories, singing hymns and Primary songs, giving talks, bearing testimony and serving others.

These early experiences often become part of the foundation upon which members build their lives.

Shaping the Lives of Ward Members

For generations of members, some of their earliest memories of the Church were made in Primary.

The lessons learned as children about kindness, honesty, prayer, service, forgiveness and faith can remain with them long after they leave Primary.

A child who once stood nervously in front of the congregation to give a talk may later become a confident teacher or leader. A child who learned to serve others in a Primary activity may grow into an adult who continues that spirit of service in the Church, family and community.

Primary therefore plays an important role in preparing children not only for the responsibilities they will have in the Church, but also for the responsibilities they will carry throughout their lives.

The influence is particularly evident when today’s parents and leaders remember their own Primary experiences and now watch their children receive similar opportunities.

A Legacy Passed From One Generation to Another

The 148th anniversary also celebrated something deeply important to the Tema 3rd Ward—the passing of faith from one generation to the next.

Parents bring their children to Church. Teachers give their time to prepare lessons and activities. Leaders create opportunities for children to participate. Older members encourage and support the younger generation.

Together, these efforts create an environment where children can feel that they belong.

For many families, Primary becomes part of the rhythm of their lives. Children grow up surrounded by people who know them, encourage them and want to see them succeed.

That sense of community can have an influence that extends well beyond childhood.

Service in Action

The celebration was not only about singing and remembering the past. It also demonstrated the spirit of service that Primary seeks to develop in children.

The children were involved in helping with the celebration, including carrying and distributing supplies. Even simple acts of service provide valuable opportunities for children to learn responsibility and think about the needs of others.

These experiences reinforce an important lesson: serving others is not something reserved for adults.

Children can serve too.

Whether through helping someone, sharing with others, participating in a Church activity or simply showing kindness to a friend, children learn that discipleship is expressed through action.

Parents and Leaders Play a Vital Role

Behind the children are parents, Primary leaders and teachers who dedicate their time and energy to helping them grow.

Their work is often quiet and takes place week after week. They prepare lessons, organize activities, teach songs, encourage participation and help children understand the gospel.

The 148th anniversary was therefore also a celebration of those who have served in Primary over the years.

Many members who have served in Primary may never fully know the long-term impact of their efforts. A lesson taught years ago, a kind word from a teacher or encouragement given to a nervous child can remain in that child’s memory for decades.

The legacy of Primary is built through these small acts of love repeated over generations.

Looking to the Next Generation

As Tema 3rd Ward celebrated 148 years of Primary, the focus ultimately remained on the children themselves.

The young members participating today will eventually become the teachers, leaders, parents and servants of tomorrow.

The children singing at the beginning of Sunday worship are already learning to take their place within the larger Church community. The lessons they receive today are helping prepare them for the responsibilities and opportunities that lie ahead.

The anniversary was therefore both a celebration of the past and a reminder of the future.

For Tema 3rd Ward, 148 years of Primary represents 148 years of children being taught, encouraged, loved and given opportunities to grow in faith.

And as the children continue to learn, sing and serve, the legacy of Primary continues one child, one family and one generation at a time.
